The Castle and its History

In specialist literature, the Château de Gorce is referred to as one of the most remarkable castles of the Charente department. The origins of this Château – which was originally a military fortress from the middle ages – can be traced back to the 14th and 15th century.  The Château impressively overlooks the valley of the Transon river retaining its original character. The access road via the avenue leads directly to the defence tower which represents the oldest part of the complex. The defence tower and the main building form a big courtyard and there are also two adjoining buildings to the right and to the left side. Various parts of different buildings can still be found today: the pigeonry, the bakery, the main entrance, which is beautifully decorated with stonemasonry, and numerous other details from the Château’s very long history.
